Laura Broad
Charly: What more can I say? You are living proof that people can sing Evanescence songs just as good as Amy Lee, without being a carbon copy. And the emotion and roughness in your voice. You gave me chills. I believed every single word your sang. You are just phenomenal!
Steven: There is something called the “spine-tingling” or the “Goosebumps” effect. I have never been so moved and so amazed like this by a Sim Idol performance until now. The emotion was haunting, and you have presented a wide-range choice of songs from Evanescence to Gnarls Barkley. There’s something called with the ability of “singing the phone book” and that definitely describes you. You make things your style subtly, and I feel you are pulling away from this dead heat between the rest of the group. This is what Sim Idol and being an artist is all about. You are the great communicator that made this performance believable, emotional, and authentic. I loved it. One of Sim Idol’s best performances ever!
Dean: You have a way of picking unexpected songs and then sounding really surprisingly good on them. Though I could hear you were struggling a little for the notes you achieved all of them and with a surprising amount of emotion and realism that really made me feel like those were your words. There's a delightful and surprising amount of grit in your voice that I don't recall hearing before now. You're quickly becoming my pick to win this whole thing. Wonderful job!
Heather Ramer
Charly: I have to be honest. this performance made me went "So What?". No doubt you can sing, but my problem is that you are being overshadowed by the other voices. And the reason I think that’s happened is because a sense of who you are in not shining through your vocals. I though that the vocals were very predictable, wooden, and once again....imitating someone else’s style rather than your style. Although, you did show glimpses of what I liked about your voice in the auditions. If you manage to stay one more week, you better give a performance that makes me remember "Heather Ramer".
Steven: In some way, I agree with Charly because I think a main problem is just not hearing that maturity, that progression, and that umph. I still felt the best I ever heard from you was your first audition with the Celine song because it stood out. Why? You took something different, made into Heather’s style. Your tone sounded different doing the Top 14 and Final 9 song because I think you are conforming into what you think the song should sound like. Forget that. Being an artist is just putting yourself out there as YOU. That audition was 100% pure Heather putting that spin, making it her own. Now, if you do get through, be you, sing your heart out, and take calculated risks. Because singing “A Broken Wing” is one hell of a risk, but it wasn’t as executed well…and taking risks does not mean taking one of the more harder country songs and trying them. But good luck because you are still a great vocalist, but an artist, you need some work on that.
Dean: I like this song on you much better than your Carrie Underwood number, because it didn't feel like you were painting on a phony country twang. It sounded very mature and controlled until the chorus where it got shaky and pitchy in places. Not the best I've heard from you.
Joanne Hall
Charly: Ladies and gentleman, JOANNE IS BACK! There is the energy in your voice i missed. Such a powerful, strong voice. Great song as well. I thought that you got a little bit shouty at the end, but you nailed it. I just worry that this would come across just a little bit old-fashioned, but this song is a well known and popular country song. So I would continue on forming a connection to the audience on an emotional level. But nevertheless, good job.
Steven: Joanne, you are a huge powerhouse! To me, your rawness with some umph came through in this Tammy Wynette classic. Your control is there, and everything’s on pinpoint. It’s a folksy kind of song. But being this is a competition, you need one of those weeks where you just do something like a showstopper. This kind of song isn’t what one can create a moment of, but you sang it excellently. By looking at the 5-panel jury for Top 14, I think my overall analysis for you is to still show the best attributes of your voices, but making wise decisions for song choice; some may like this performance, some may not because it’s an old song. I would love to hear you sing sometimes songs that past the 60s (but I know you can’t do that next week …hinting on the theme). The main thing, don’t present yourself too outdated (sang a 50s, 60s song) but keep your oldies root, your style, but show some variety by picking things that maintain Joanne in more modern years. But still, very good job!
Dean: Your smoky and mature tone works well on the old country music. This performance came across as really authentic to me and where I was starting to wonder if there would be a WOW moment you brought it home in the end. Nice work.
Holly Christina
Charly: This was very sweet and pretty. But the song really didn't do anything for your voice. I also noticing a pattern with you. As much as you are versatile with other genres, you display one type of emotion with your tone in my opinion. I would just love to see another side to your style...because the sweetness will become predictable over the course of the competition.
Steven: Well to generalize what Charly is probably saying is what I felt 100% what went wrong with the performance was the emotion. It lacked that inspiration, sincerity which Lee Ann Womack gave in this great song. This is a song I get pretty moved because it leaves the listener with a message, and the whole interpretation and communication just got lost. I don’t think you singing out of classical leaves you at a bigger disadvantage because I actually find you so versatile, but you just have to bring it. You can sing without a doubt, but I felt this would have been better tenfold if you put more feeling into it.
Dean: The backing was way too quiet in the mix, this is the first time we're hearing you do something a bit out of your more classical comfort level. I think your tone works nicely for a more contemporary song but some of your phrasing sounds a little uncertain to me.
Tracy Lynn
Charly: Not as good as last weeks, but still a solid and d**n good performance! I liked how you changed up the melody in this one to make it sound completely new to me. It was very humble and sweet version of the song. I was just hoping you took it up a notch and let more joy about everything you had and were singing about. Don't hold back. Sing your heart out.
Steven: You are just a voice any person with a bad day needs. Your voice is smooth, therapeutic, and soothing to the soul. This performance was soothing, and it was still a very good performance. I disagree with Charly in a way, because this is you and your voice. I still felt the emotion and interpretation of “life is great, it could not be better etc…” It was subtle, and it was really good. To be honest, it was as good as Sara Evan’s version. Now, I would definitely love to hear you apply the wonderful qualities of your voice into what’s coming on with next week’s theme (so you audience people better not be stupid eliminating her). So the key is just right song choices and being careful with them. Once again, another very good performance.
Dean: If anyone can give Laura a run for her money in my mind it's you. I loved this song by Edwin McCain and later by Sara Evans. Technically you sound beautiful. My only criticism would be there's a little something missing.. this song is a joyous declaration of love and I feel like when I picture you recording it that I can't see you smiling. This may sound like odd advice but sometimes if you smile while singing a song like this it is audible in your voice. Wonderful job regardless. We have a competition here folks!
Muhammad Jami
Charly: You have this unique, raw sound.. I liked how you changed up the melody and you also picked a potentially good song for you I still believe in your tone and the amazing heart you try to put in your songs, but you have to focus more on your vocals in order to run with the big dogs. The beginning started out rough and pitchy, but you hit your stride towards the middle of the verse and the end. You barely had control your glory notes singing the chorus and I think its because your upper register is not your strongpoint. RELAX and find the right key for you. Compared to the others tonight, I would worry.
Steven: I think this was one of better performances comparing them to your previous ones in the past. You sounded like you had a bit of Steve Perry in you. You are the total opposite with Heather. Heather, great singing, lack of artistry; You, decent singing, great artistry. It was a tad pitchy and you sounded really really rough on the edges as you were hitting the higher notes (I kind of felt some struggling a bit by the sound of it). It was alright, and the song choice was great. I think Charly hit the nail on the problem though.
Dean: I'm glad to see you're still in because I think the competition needs a confident male singer. It's a common but gutsy choice picking songs like this one. Let's face it. We've all heard a million different people take a shot at "Open Arms." I think this was a little rough around the edges but true to what you've been in the competition thus far, a dark horse. I would have chosen a different song but you gave it your all and for that I give you props.
Regina Beasley
Charly: WOO! Loved your rich deep tone in delivering this song. This song choice was better than last weeks. You have always delivered in your songs vocally. I would just love to see you more of a connection between you and the lyrics. You tell great stories, but i am beginning to wonder, like Holly, if you could show more variations of your personality in these songs. Other than that, that was a very good vocal performance.
Steven: I kind of disagree what Charly had to say because you sang this song with a different emotion and a very honest sounding emotion in this song. It had authenticity, it was believable. The vocals were on point. But I’m hoping next week, you just nail it by presenting your stronger side of your voice and just hit it out of the ball park. You’ve shown the softer dynamics of your voice, I would like to hear a bit more belting…just to prove to the world what Regina Beasley can do. But country does sound very nice on you. Just give it all next week.
Dean: It's been a very long time since I have heard this song. This performance didn't feel as genuine as others you've pulled out for us. There was nothing particularly bad about it but it didn't really convince me you were feeling the emotion in the lyrics. Not your best.
Heather Davis
Charly: I have to sort disagree with Steven on this one. I think you were VERY naughty! Great song for your voice and we finally got to hear some of that magic personality of yours in your performance tonight. I thought it was very....oh, I'm am very sexy in a very innocent and teasing way. It was a good performance, but the thing I would have liked is if you took more risks in changing up the melody in the vocals slightly instead of singing it straight....cuz i thought the song was a little to easy for you.
Steven: I just think the sluttiness didn’t come out the first half of the song. Once after the chorus, it really got better with the attitude and personality of it. It was flirty, but come on…this song is simply whore-ish and slutty…LMFAO. But it was still a good choice of song. You definitely took my comment into stride providing Heather now with some umph, personality, and liveliness. Now, I’m not insinuating that you are a slut LOL, but you couldn’t pick a better song to fully show how Heather is just this exciting, fun performer. Vocals were good, and now, considering the theme for next week, pick something that makes your vocals shine and accentuate your personality…and that can help you in the long run not only as a singer but an artist.
Dean: You do this track justice.. it's Heather Davis the sex kitten! You sound very coy and like you had a great time recording this track. Nice effects on the bridge and you hit that high note at the end out of the park. Great job!
Erica Roane
Charly: WOW! Erica.....awesome AWESOME job! Who knew you had that much growl in you. it was like a tabby cat with a lion sized roar! You had so much attitude and your really sold the song. On top of that, your vocals were on point and you picked a good song to display your vocals. You rocked it out, girl.
Steven: You are not only about the blues, but we have a rocker in the house! I think that was the perfect song choice, it accentuates your grit, rawness, and personality in this performance. This is the best I have ever heard from you because you presented what Erica can do. I actually heard the original version after listening to yours and to be honest, I prefer your version 100x to The Gossip’s. You opened your repertoire to new heights, and it’s now growing your maturity to an artist. Great job! Best I’ve heard from you. If you performed that last year, I swear Elisha and Jake would be shaking in their boots heavily. It’s a rare thing to say it 2 times in 1 night, but one of the best Sim Idol performances ever.
Dean: And the country girl chooses rock You really embodied classic rock on this performance, dare I say you reminded me a bit of Heart's Nancy Wilson. You definitely put your all into it. Great effort! What I'm loving about you Erica is how much you've improved in the time I've known you. I'm really impressed. You're in my top 3 thus far.
Charly: What more can I say? You are living proof that people can sing Evanescence songs just as good as Amy Lee, without being a carbon copy. And the emotion and roughness in your voice. You gave me chills. I believed every single word your sang. You are just phenomenal!
